What Living is to Me

What is living? I guess it’s different for everybody. For many, it’s something that we’re always chasing but never quite catch. It’s a dream or idea that may or most likely won’t actually happen. Too often our idea of good living is not about where we are, but about where we want to be. Not about what we have, but about what we want. If we’re not careful, we’ll miss out on the good living right in front of us while we’re wishing for something we don’t have and may never get. I wrote this one several years ago about being grateful and appreciating the little things in life. Or about appreciating the bigger things in life that are not really things at all.

What Living is to Me

Will Campbell

It’s a fishing pole on a creek bank

A deep breath of mountain air

It’s sipping a cup of coffee

On the front porch rocking chair

It’s a dirt road in the summertime

With the windows rolled down

It’s laughing out loud

With nobody else around

That’s what living is

What living is to me

It’s a cool breeze in September

Before the leaves begin to change

It’s cooling off in the river

It’s walking out in the rain

It’s a good dog right there by your side

It’s hanging out with friends

It’s trying hard and messing up

And then trying hard again

That’s what living is

What living is to me

It’s waiting out the storm

And the things you can’t control

It’s keeping your composure

When your head’s about to explode

It’s shooting for the stars

It’s climbing without a net

It’s falling down and getting up

Then taking another step

That’s what living is

What living is to me

It’s making sure the job’s done right

It’s pride in what you do

It’s standing by your word

Doing your best to follow through

It’s admitting when you’re wrong

It’s cutting against the grain

It’s holding strong to what you believe

When the world thinks you’re insane

That’s what living is

What living is to me

It’s laying down in bed at night

Beside the one you love

It’s counting all my blessings

And thanking God above

For giving me

Everything I need

And more

Thank you Lord

For this life you’ve given me

That’s what living is

What living is to me
